How to Break Free from Perfectionism and Achieve Authentic Success

Perfectionism—it’s something we all struggle with. At its core, perfectionism is a fear of failure. I’ve been there countless times, trying to make sure everything is flawless before taking the next step, especially when I was launching my first program earlier this year. I spent way too much time going back, tweaking, and "perfecting" instead of just putting it out there. In hindsight, I was scared that maybe no one would want to join my program.

The truth? It was all in my head. Once I launched, I made my first $15K. And guess what? I kept improving it along the way.

The problem with perfectionism is that there’s no room for growth. If you don’t try, you don’t fail—but you also don’t learn. And where’s the fun in that? I started to redefine what failure meant to me. The worst thing that could happen if something isn’t perfect is I learn what to do differently next time.

One of my favorite quotes from Think Again by Adam Grant really hits home: “The greatest tragedy is not failure, but never reaching for your potential.” Perfectionism keeps you stuck, and if you let it, it will stop you from ever reaching your full potential.

Now, I actually get excited about failing. I encourage my mentees to find three ways to fail every day and tell me what they learned. It’s become fun, not something to fear.

So, how do you overcome perfectionism and achieve authentic success? For me, authentic success means doing what aligns with my core values. It’s having the autonomy—both financial and with my time—to live the life I want, doing what fuels my passion. Authentic success is deeply personal; it’s not about seeking external validation, but achieving something that’s meaningful only to you.

Here are three actionable steps to help you break free from perfectionism:

  1. Identify the Crux: What’s really holding you back? Get clear on why you feel the need to be perfect. Is it fear of rejection, failure, or being judged?

  2. Explore the Fear: Why does this fear have so much control over you? What would actually happen if you let it go? Would the outcome really be as bad as you imagine?

  3. Reframe the Fear: How can you turn your fear into excitement? Make failure something to look forward to. For example, I ask myself, “What would happen if I let myself fail today?” By reframing failure as a growth opportunity, you begin to see it as something positive, not as a setback.

Finally, a reflection practice can be a powerful tool for overcoming perfectionism. I used to be an avid journaler, and while my schedule doesn't always allow for that these days,

I still take time to reflect through voice memos. Speaking my thoughts aloud helps me slow down and connect with what I’m feeling.

If you’re ready to stop letting perfectionism hold you back, take a step toward authentic success by allowing yourself to fail, learn, and grow.
